About the Guild
Established in 1992
The Guild of Builders and Contractors was formed by fourteen experienced builders who believed that professionalism, integrity and competence should define the construction industry.
Their objective was clear: to create a Guild made up of reputable firms and individuals who are actively involved in the building industry, are knowledgeable in their field, and trade with integrity.
That founding principle remains unchanged.
Our Purpose
The Guild exists to:
- Maintain a membership of experienced, knowledgeable professionals
- Promote high standards of workmanship and conduct
- Represent the collective voice of Members
- Encourage continual improvement in construction methods and practice
- Protect the interests of both Members and clients
We believe that raising standards strengthens the entire industry.
Trusted Membership
In 2015, the Guild introduced the category of Trusted Member, recognising firms and individuals who meet enhanced standards of professionalism and financial stability.
Trusted Membership is open to builders, specialist contractors and construction consultants who can demonstrate:
- A minimum trading history
- Verified client references
- Appropriate levels of insurance
- Financial soundness
- Ongoing compliance with Guild standards
Membership is not granted indefinitely. Due diligence checks are carried out annually, and continued membership depends upon maintaining the required standard.
This ensures that the Guild’s reputation is actively protected — not simply inherited.
Representing the Industry
The Guild exists not only to support its Members, but also to represent their collective voice.
We:
- Promote high standards of workmanship and conduct
- Encourage continual improvement in construction methods
- Represent Members’ views on matters affecting the building industry
- Provide a forum for the exchange of professional knowledge
By maintaining a strong and reputable membership, the Guild seeks to enhance confidence in the wider construction sector.
Why the Guild Matters
The construction industry is often subject to public scrutiny and negative publicity. While much of the industry operates professionally and responsibly, inconsistent standards can undermine confidence.
The Guild was formed to address this challenge directly — by setting clear expectations of integrity, competence and accountability.
Clients appointing a Guild Member can do so knowing that:
- The Member has satisfied defined entry requirements
- Standards are monitored
- A formal complaints procedure exists
- Membership may be withdrawn if standards are not upheld
The Guild’s role is therefore both protective and progressive — safeguarding clients while supporting responsible professionals.
Our Commitment
The founding principle of the Guild remains unchanged:
To maintain a membership of experienced and knowledgeable professionals who trade with integrity.
By upholding this principle, we aim to strengthen both public confidence and professional standards across the construction industry.
